A FAREWELL BY COVENTRY PATMORE SUMMARY

Victorian poet and critic Coventry Patmore was born into a literary household in Essex, England. He was an English poet and essayist. In this poem, the poet bids a sad farewell to his beloved. He hopes that after they part ways, they may meet again. He gathers all his strength and against the wishes of his heart, he is about to leave his beloved. The only comfort they have is that the 'sad road' that they are going to take is clear ahead of them. It is their sad fate that they have go separate ways. They take steps in directions opposite to each other, to live the life ahead of them. They shed tears for this sad separation. They do not have any hope. Hope is far away from them. But the poet has one wish. During their time alone, when they are no longer sad nor do they weep for their loneliness, he hopes that they may meet again. After their journey is over, they would be surprised to see each other. It will be a sweet end to their bitter journey. They would shed tears as they recognise each other and be happy ever after.
